Privacy policy

Who we are

40k.app is a free Warhammer 40,000 army builder and rules reference. This policy explains what information the site collects, why, who it is shared with, and the choices you have.

For any privacy question or request - including asking for a copy of your data or for your account to be deleted - contact us on the 40k.app Discord server.

Your account

You can use most of the site without an account. If you sign in - with Google, Discord or a one-time code sent to your email - we store:

  • your name, email address and profile picture from the sign-in provider;
  • what you create on the site: army lists, comments, favourites and preferences;
  • your sign-in sessions, including the IP address and browser they were made from, to keep your account secure;
  • if you connect Patreon to become a supporter, your Patreon account ID and pledge status.

Lists you make public, and comments you post, can be seen by anyone. Your email address is never shown to other users.

Analytics

We use analytics to understand how the site is used: which pages are viewed, for how long, and from what kind of device, browser and country (worked out from your IP address). If you are signed in, this is linked to your account, along with your name, email address and role.

To count how many people view an army list, your browser stores a random visitor ID and session ID. They are sent with each list view and are not linked to who you are unless you are signed in.

When something breaks, an error report is collected so it can be fixed. It includes technical details of what went wrong, your browser and IP address, and - if you are signed in - your account.

Advertising

Ads on 40k.app are served by Google AdSense, and pay for running the site. Supporters do not see ads.

Google and its partners use cookies and similar technologies to serve ads, to limit how often you see them, to measure them and - where you allow it - to personalise them based on your visits to this and other sites. See how Google uses information from sites that use its services.

Visitors from the European Economic Area, the UK and Switzerland are asked for their consent before personalised ads are shown, and can change their choice at any time from the privacy and cookie settings link on the site. Anyone can turn off personalised ads from Google in My Ad Center.

Stored on your device

Besides the advertising cookies above, the site keeps a few things in your browser so it works the way you left it: the sign-in cookie that keeps you signed in, your theme and view preferences, and the anonymous visitor and session IDs used to count list views.

Who we share it with

We do not sell your information. It is shared only with:

  • the service providers that run the site for us - hosting, storage, sign-in emails, analytics and error reporting - who process it only on our behalf;
  • Google AdSense, for advertising;
  • Google, Discord and Patreon, when you choose to sign in or connect with them.

Some of these are based in the United States, so your information may be processed outside your own country.

Legal basis and how long we keep it

We use your account information to provide the service you signed up for; analytics and error reports because we have a legitimate interest in keeping the site working and improving it; and personalised advertising only with your consent where the law requires it.

Account information is kept until you ask for your account to be deleted. Analytics and error reports are kept for a limited time and then deleted by the providers that hold them.

Your rights

Depending on where you live, you can ask to see the information we hold about you, have it corrected or deleted, object to how it is used, or withdraw consent you have given. Contact us on the 40k.app Discord server and we will help. You can also complain to your local data protection authority.

40k.app is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect their information.

Changes

If this policy changes, the updated version will be posted on this page with a new date at the top.
